Kurt Andersen slams Kossacks in NY Magazine

Tue Dec 04, 2007 at 07:31:54 PM PDT

On the cover of this weeks New York Magazine (NYM) there is a teaser that says "Kurt Andersen on why liberals hate good news." Here is a link to the article La Vie en Morose

While I enjoy NYM I often find it kind of obnoxious. If you read it enough you start to think something is wrong with you if you aren't helping your kids brush up on their studies for entry into the best pre-school, or if your kids aren't on 12 different psychotropic medications. However they are usually pretty progressive.

What annoys me about this article is that Andresen says he wants progressives to win, but then opines about how we have to ignore "good news" e.g. "The Surge is Working". Its bad enough when you have to listen to Lou Dobbs blathering right wing talking points, but to see this guy get it so wrong really pisses me off

Andersen says,

How strange it is, then, that among the many dozens of posts on Daily Kos during the past two weeks there was only one citing this major and, for antiwar activists, inconvenient turn of events. No mention of or link to the Times piece, but simply an opportunity to rant once again about Joe Lieberman. Shouldn’t the online headquarters of the Democratic left be chewing over the issue like crazy, if not admitting they may have been mistaken about the surge then at least trying to figure out how to deal with the possible domestic political impact of the new facts on the ground? It seems like willful obliviousness, childish and slightly cowardly—not unlike hard-core Republicans’ four-year-long circle-the-wagons refusal to face the facts about the rest of the misbegotten war.

Its obvious that Andersen like Matt Bai doesn't spend alot of time at DKos.

It stuck out at me because I started a thread talking about the issue
on November 23rd that included a link to the times article

OK I guess I can't expect Kurt to read every openthread but he could do a little "RESEARCH" Now I'm just a dumb old blogger in slippers and a bathrobe, but I do know how to type "Success of the Surge" into the search function.

Lookie here!

Iraq and Afghanistan War Surge Hokey Pokey WH attempts to Obscure the War Failures by stevenlesser

Coincidentally, the Iraq surge, which has temporarily reduced violence levels in Iraq but failed in its primary purpose, providing a respite so a political solution could be enacted, totaled 30,000 troops. These troops will now likely need to be redeployed to Afghanistan to provide a surge in the worsening situation there. No, no one has come forth and said any of this yet, but the Bush administration is not going to have a choice. Either they can cede Afghanistan to the Taliban or they will have to send the additional troops.

You can also look here, here, here, here, here, and here.

just because you don't accept the conventional wisdom GOP Propaganda doesn't mean you are ignoring the issue.

OK... so maybe a search engine is beyond Mr. Andersen's capability. He could have at least looked at what the Front Pagers have written. Again without really trying all that hard here is.

Expectations and Delusions in Iraq and Afghanistan from DHinMI

Then he goes on to say.

Yet ... aren’t we pleased, too, that the Israelis and Palestinians are restarting negotiations, that the U.S. seems seriously engaged, that the Arab League and Syria came to grant their imprimatur? And in the unlikely event that the jump-started peace process actually does produce a treaty a year from now, with credit going to this administration for making it happen, won’t we and even the Kos mob welcome it as a miraculous world-historical achievement? It’s arguable that such an outcome, if it were to affect the 2008 election, would help Democrats—by reducing the general geopolitical fear factor and reminding Americans that diplomacy can actually work. But even then ... some celebrations of the news would be grudging. There are still those on the left, after all, whose pleasure over the end of the Cold War is tainted by the fact that Ronald Reagan helped make it happen.

You know Kos mob = Angry out of touch liberals.

Hey Kurt - News Flash the New York Times, CNN, and the rest of the corporate media (now apparently including New York Magazine) are the enablers of the GOP reign that you say you want to end. If you really want to help the progressive movement and make your job easier spend a little time actually READING DKos, and then just paraphrase the salient points for your column - you know like Jon Stewart and Keith O do.

Well, as I am currently laboring to finish his gigantic tome Heyday, I will say this:

during the past four weeks I have been reading this book there was only one exciting plot event this major and, for historical fiction enthusiasts, an inconvenient turn of events.

point of the surge, and having a cap on violence with a large troop presence is not the answer.  It doesn't mean the violence is ending, it means it's slowing down temporarily.  We need to let the govt of Iraq know we are serious and will begin to redeploy, forcing them into political resolutions.  War in Iraq is not just bad because of violence, it does so much more harm than that, there are a million other reasons to GET OUT, other than the violence.

...If the so-called surge worked, then why the hell aren't all of our troops on planes headed home currently?

    Oh, I forgot.

Iraq hasn't been transformed into the 51st state yet.

Maybe when "Dancing With the Sunni Stars" is a staple on Iraqi TV...

...maybe at that juncture our troops will be allowed to get the hell out of there.

but the reduction in troop and civilian deaths, down to the unacceptable level of a year ago, on a surge that is sustainable for 4 more months, when none of the essential political work has been done.....I mean, How many diaries can you make about that?

I think the kindergarten cop story has more potential.

  •  Kurt Andersen 101 (6+ / 0-)

Obviously Mr. Andersen hasn't really read DKos or he wouldn't have falsely stated that there was only one diary regarding the surge in the last 2 weeks.

That said, what is the motivation of Andersen here? Lets take for granted he is actually telling the truth that he prefers progressives. I offer the following theory to explain his attitude.

My theory is that in Andersen's is afflicted with either one, or both, of the following:

1)The Mark Halperin Disease (aka, needing to be liked):
A media personality who repeats a lie such as the "surge is working", as a result, burnishes one's credentials in the mainstream media world as a noble "centrist". This gains one access to many powerful folks. This is in stark opposition to being seen as a dirty fucking hippie.

2)The Hitchens Disease (aka needing to be a "contrarian"):
The psychological need to go against the tide in order to bolster one's ego. The victim of this disease feels better about himself in standing up to the intimidating Upper West Side crowd.

My guess is that these afflictions override Andersen's interest in both progressivism and in telling the truth.

it's tainted by the GOP's endless revisionism about how reagan single-handedly brought the ruskies to their knees, and not through peaceful negotiation either but by tough talking militarism!

it was a great moment foremost for the soviets, and secondly for the world, and thirdly for our country, and fourthly i think for reagan personally because of the journey he had to take to get there with gorby.

but to the GOP it was purely a political event and like everything else it proves (surprise) that they were fucking right! oh and btw, we only lost the vietnam war because the politicians in washington tied the generals' hands.

That's not to say that Kurt Andersen is neurotic.  Just his intended audience. And for that, sadly, the facts don't seem matter.

P.S. If the surge is working so well, why don't we hear anything about the Iraqis stepping up as American soldiers step down and away?

  •  Surge schmurge (0+ / 0-)

First off, if anyone is bragging about the surge working, why weren't the troops there in the first place? What I see is that a mistake was made and an attempt was made to change it that might have changed a bad situation into a different situation.

If "the surge is working", so what? It's like saying,"the tanks are running". There are many more examples of what is going on in Iraq not working.

  •  That was good sleight-of-hand by Andersen (0+ / 0-)

He made news out of nothing.

If we diaried about how mad or sad we are that the surge is working, then that would be news.

He has to be a Republican because he thinks in black and white. We are either to write diaries that agree the surge is working and rejoice, or write diaries that agree the surge is working and be... angry?

I follow Iraq closely every day. I have a memory and I like to think I am not a complete idiot.

I could point out all the Polyanna reports since day 1 that turned out to be false, and I could point out all the advanced warnings seemingly smart people were making that were ignored. (Pretend I didn't point them out) because looking past that, there is still the simple fact that Iraq has never behaved in ways that were expected or desired.

Those few dead-enders poured sugar in our gas tanks at every turn. We should have expected it, but even so, Iraq descended into violence on a scale that shocked even the war pigs.

We are responsible for unleashing forces that have decimated that country.

Mr. Andersen has to pardon the fuck out of me if I refrain from jumping up and down and calling anything a success.

The welcome lull in violence from the levels it saw is indeed good news, much the same as the violence in Poland dropped of greatly after enough people were killed or displaced. Yes, it's great news. If Andersen were a doctor, he could deliver the news to a patient that was dying of cancer that he was happy to report the patient no longer had a weight problem.

To think that it is our 30,000 troops that are responsible for the reduced violence discounts the lives of fully 1/3rd of the Iraq citizens who have either died, been maimed, or displaced.

You know what? Fine; we are a sensitive nation who's ego needs constant reassurance so let's call it the Surge that fixed things there. We already have so much stupidity in the pot now, we may as well go all in.

Remember this, though; there still has been no political reconciliation and Iraq is still completely and utterly without a stable government. They are fully dependent on us and we have not moved that one inch, despite what Bush or McCain might say.

There is no love-fest going on. The Iraqi's largely hate us, and are constantly testing the wind.

I think it is wonderful that there is a drop in violence there. I would feel much better knowing what the cause was just to gauge if it will be lasting. That unfortunately isn't the case. I know I would also feel better if we could resurrect their dead.

We said we want change, and they gave us a handful.
