A new study by the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and CareerBuilder.com provides new data on motives for sending US jobs abroad (and abroad can mean Canada) as well as which jobs are a likely target.

Some Fun For Your Brain

Sat Feb 09, 2008 at 04:24:37 PM PDT

Two cows were standing in a field and talking:

"Say, old chap, this Mad Cow disease has me in a bit of a tizzy."
"Not me," replied the second, "I’m a duck."

I like irony. I don’t know exactly what it is, but I know it when it hits me. I can’t say I know it when I see it because I suspect there is good deal of irony that gets lost on me – which is ironic, for someone who likes irony.

In Opposition to Hillary Clinton...

Wed Sep 19, 2007 at 06:03:10 AM PDT

Hillary Clinton supports laws, regulations and trade agreements which subordinate the broad general good of all Americans and the long term interests of the United States to the whims of corporations controlled by monied elites. Hillary Clinton believes in the same radical corporate-managed trade and labor policies supported by the Bush Administration. These radical pro-corporate policies, established in law and government regulation, enable corporations to destroy good paying jobs for Americans undercutting the very idea of a broad middle class society.

Withdrawl from Iraq - The IT/Supply Chain perspective

Fri Aug 31, 2007 at 03:01:29 PM PDT

In my recent copy of baseline magazine a magazine targeted at chief information officers (CIOs). I saw an article called "How to leave Iraq"

I always like to read diaries that take a non-political perspective on issues we talk about here so I thought I pull out some excerpts from this one.

EPA to IT: Let Your Datacenters Grow Green

Thu Aug 30, 2007 at 02:20:03 PM PDT

Crossposted from SmokeyMonkey.org

At the beginning of August, the EPA released a report to Congress per its Energy Star program requirements.  This EPA report (PDF) details the increasing levels of energy consumed by computer datacenters, both federally and in the private sector, as well as suggesting standards that could save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

This report assesses current trends in energy use and energy costs of data centers and servers in the U.S. and outlines existing and emerging opportunities for improved energy efficiency. It provides particular information on the costs of data centers and servers to the federal government and opportunities for reducing those costs through improved efficiency. It also makes recommendations for pursuing these energy-efficiency opportunities broadly across the country through the use of information and incentive-based programs.

What's that sucking sound?

Fri Apr 20, 2007 at 10:09:42 AM PDT

40 million high-skill American jobs leaving for other countries.

Alan Blinder, a Princeton economist, predicts that 40 million computer programming bookeeping, graphic deisgn and other jobs will be gone from American soil in the next decade or two.  40 million is more than twice the total number of people now employed in manufacturing.

Blinder was taken aback when, sitting in at the business summit in Davos, Switzerland, he heard U.S. executives talk enthusiastically about all the professional jobs they could outsource to lower-wage countries. And he's a free trader.

More from this Seattle Times editorial   is below the fold, and it ain't pretty.

Journalism, Industry or Art?

Mon Nov 13, 2006 at 08:12:56 AM PDT

Journalism; is it an industry or art? A combination from both of them? None of them? Nowadays there is lots of struggle for the description and proving a unit definition of journalism as a professional job.

Media cannot work in a sealing wax condition

Mon Aug 07, 2006 at 03:00:25 PM PDT

With regard to the necessity of obeying the laws and borders, we have to say that global media can not accomplish any work and do their moral duties with a closed, dark, sealing wax and dependent situation, said Professor Yahya Kamalipour Ravari, the headmaster of communication and creative arts department of US Purdue university, in an exclusive interview with Blogherald.
Media are parts of a general structure that contains culture, literature, economy and politics. Added professor Kamaalipour, if this structure doesn't provide the suitable bases and backgrounds of compositor and respectable critique and activity and a good impression, it artificially is to restrict the global media in research and solution providing and also the development of each society.

Information Technology Can Improve Health Care

Wed Jul 26, 2006 at 05:53:38 PM PDT

Microsoft has bought the rights to develop an information technology system for hospitals and clinics (called Azyxxi) that makes all of a patient's records available in one place.  This computer program, developed independently by information technology professionals at Washington Hospital Center in DC, takes advantage of the many digitized records that already exist in a hospital and puts them on a common digital "platform" so that doctors and nurses can quickly consult patient records and make more informed medical decision.  Articles in the NYT ." [ http://www.nytimes.com/... ]and WaPost[ http://www.washingtonpost.com/...  ]  say this technology has reduced wait times for emergency medical care and increased patient satisfaction.

VICTORY in Virginia and the rising influence of netroots

Wed Jun 14, 2006 at 08:44:45 AM PDT

James Webb has been declared the victor in the Virginia Democratic Party contest against longtime business lobbyist Harris Miller. The contest was a study in contrasts not generally captured in the reports of the MSM...

Webb, a Vietnam War hero, best-selling author, former Secretary of the Navy, respected national security expert, "political outsider" and populist democrat was pitted against Harris Miller, a consummate Washington "insider" whose activities as a pro-outsourcing high tech industry lobbyist were often obscured behind press accounts of his ties to Virginia state Democratic Party figures and portrayal as a Democratic Party activist, businessman and technology executive.

Ironically, the Internet blogosphere proved to be a major weakness for Harris Miller.

My name is Sona Shah. I'm an Indian-American computer programmer, an American citizen, and a victim of unjust laws and unjust business practices. I lost my middle class technology job to Harris Miller's vision of the "competitive global economy" -- "business visa" abuse and offshore outsourcing.

Harris Miller and the American job loss nightmare

Tue May 02, 2006 at 09:43:28 AM PDT

Harris Miller, past president and chief lobbyist for the pro-outsourcing ITAA business lobby and James Webb's Virginia Democratic senate primary opponent has long been considered the "point man" for offshore outsourcing and worker replacement programs by many of us in the anti-outsourcing movement. (One of his unflatter nicknames is Harris "the shiller" Miller.)

More than just a mere "player" in the insider business lobbyist-political nexus, Miller has been one of the most influencial lobbyists for moving American white collar jobs offshore. While Miller's organization, the ITAA, is indeed a "tech lobby" the processes and excuses championed by Miller and used to move information technology jobs offshore or import low wage foreign workers are "dual use".

When IT Pros talk , Harris Miller's name comes up

Saturday evening I had a rather interesting conversation with another software engineer. I hadn't seen him in several months. So, we caught up on a number of topics including, offshore outsourcing, layoffs, H-1b, job insecurity, Bill Gates and Harris Miller
